What Are Evergreen Retainers?

Traditional retainers require manual tracking and awkward "please replenish" conversations. Evergreen retainers automate the entire process:

  • Set a threshold: When trust balance drops below $X, trigger replenishment
  • Automatic notification: Client receives professional request
  • Consistent cash flow: Work never stops due to depleted retainer
  • Happy clients: No surprise balance requests mid-matter

Setting Up an Evergreen Retainer

Step 1: Open Matter Settings

Go to the client/matter and open the Trust Settings tab.

Step 2: Enable Evergreen

Check "Evergreen Retainer" and set your parameters:

  • Target Balance: The ideal retainer amount (e.g., $5,000)
  • Threshold: When to trigger replenishment (e.g., $1,000)
  • Replenishment Amount: How much to request (e.g., $4,000 to return to target)

Step 3: Configure Notification

Choose automatic email notification or manual alert. Customize the message template if desired.

Pro Tip

Set your threshold at roughly 2-3 hours of work. This gives the client time to replenish before the balance actually hits zero, avoiding any work stoppage.
